For years, the National Basketball Association has been notorious for producing funny commercials and television spots involving NBA players, commentators and mascots. Among their most popular ones are their trademark bobblehead spots, which incorporate the heads of the biggest stars in the league.
This season, the NBA turned to The Ed Sullivan Show to produce two sixties-themed bobblehead commercial spots. The first commercial was aptly titled “Big Things are Coming.” It aired during the opening week of the season and featured the bobbleheads of renowned NBA stars covering The Turtles on The Ed Sullivan Show “Happy Together” performance.
This was a fitting song choice, after the NBA celebrated the end of a lockout and the start of the 2011-12 season which had been put on hold for almost two months.
The second spot, entitled “A BIG Thank You,” has been airing during the Eastern/Western Conference finals and also features NBA players’ bobbleheads, this time to Sam & Dave’s performance of “Thank You” on The Ed Sullivan Show.
Both commercials include big names such as Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Blake Griffin, Dwyane Wade, Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Durant, Pau Gasol and even the Chicago Bulls mascot Benny the Bull.
It is nice to see that, even 41 years after the show finished its run, The Ed Sullivan Show continues to make its way into pop culture and onto millions of television screens around the world.
We hope you’ve enjoyed these bobblehead commercials and we would love to hear which other performances you would like to see in the future.
