Today marks what would have been Elvis Presley’s 76th Birthday. On January 8, 1935, Elvis was born in a two-room shotgun house in Tupelo, Mississippi. A little known fact about Elvis is that he actually had an identical twin brother who was delivered before him but did not survive.
To celebrate Elvis’ birthday thousands of fans will make the annual pilgrimage to Graceland. This year’s festivities will include a tribute concert to the King of Rock N Roll, a large gathering of Elvis impersonators and a special ceremony honoring Chilean miner Edison Pena, who is a huge Elvis fan and actually sang the King’s music while trapped underground.
Elvis, whose sound and raw, energetic performances captivated the youth of America decades ago is still regarded as one of the most important figures of 20th-century popular culture. Elvis appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show three times from 1956 to 1957, entering living rooms across the country and creating a cultural revolution that changed musical tastes and entertainment forever.
