As we begin to enter the summer season, The Ed Sullivan Show wanted to shine some sunlight on one of its fastest growing platforms, TikTok. In just over a year since the inception of the account, we’ve seen tremendous support from our followers. Today we’d like to share our top 10 TikTok clips that have shaken up the TikTok community.
On September 24th, 1967, The Mamas & the Papas performed their hit songs, Twelve Thirty, Monday, Monday, I Call Your Name and California Dreamin’. Following their performance, Cass Elliot told the audience that it was an absolute pleasure to perform on the show. Sullivan returned the praise and love, and asked the group for their autographs for his daughter, Betty, who was a big fan.
On July 20, 1969, Caterina Valente and Silvio Francesco took The Ed Sullivan theater stage with a medley of songs, clarinet playing and tap dancing. Some of the songs performed were The Look of Love, CBD and That Old Black Magic.
On October 12, 1969, Shirley Bassey was booked to perform after Topo Gigio and before Woody Allen. With such a prime slot on the episode, Bassey performed I’ll Never Fall In Love Again and This Is My Life.
On March 2, 1969, Creedence Clearwater Revival made their first of two appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. They performed their hits Proud Mary and Good Golly Miss Molly.
On April 25, 1965, Charo performed on The Ed Sullivan Show for the very first time. She was the dazzling opening act with hits La Cucaracha and La Bamba. Charo began playing guitar at age 9 and trained under the famed Andrés Segovia (who performed on the show as well).
On February 8, 1970, Bobby Goldsboro made his first and only appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. A couple years after this performance, Bobby went on to have his own show The Bobby Goldsboro Show from 1973 – 1976. His was considered to be one of the most successful syndicated shows at that time.
December 10, 1961, Sarah Vaughan made her final appearance on the show. She performed Great Day and Seranata preceding the hilarious Rip Taylor. In recognition of her amazing and influential career, an inaugural Sarah Vaughan Day was declared in the San Francisco Bay area on March 27.
On February 27, 1966, Gary Lewis and The Playboys made their third appearance on the show. They sang their hits She’s Just My Style and Sure Gonna Miss Her. That week’s Sullivan Show also featured performances by two other favorite artists from the era, Nancy Sinatra and Petula Clark.
On February 28, 1965, the soon to be Mr.Las Vegas performed a medley of hits which included Ma,She’s Makin Eyes At Me, Baby Face, Waiting For The Robert E. Lee and You’re Nobody Till Somebody Loves You. This episode was broadcast from Florida’s Miami Beach Auditorium and was a special treat for the fans down South. Newton’s performances on The Ed Sullivan Show were some of his earliest television performances. Soon after he would take his talents to Las Vegas and make his start at the Fremont Hotel and Casino. This was only the beginning of a beautiful career. And yes, that was a Casablanca reference.
